Chapter Fourteen

Betrayal

IT HAD LED me straight to its own lair. I felt like a complete idiot to have trusted it, just like a lamb to the slaughter. The irony didn’t escape me.

“What about the reward?” I reminded it desperately. “The reward will be much tastier than a stringy little witch like me. I can make sure you have lots of treats, a whole herd of sheep if you want.”

“No sheep. Witches much tastier than sheep, much tastier than cats. Witches very tasty.”

“Did you eat the red-haired witch?” I became sick with dread for both myself and Evika.

“No eating red witch,” it said regretfully.

At least that was good. I renewed my efforts to free myself, but the mud had now hardened around my ankles. I felt like my feet were encased in solid stone or a block of concrete. Zul’s horns! I didn’t want to leave this life as a sub-demon’s dinner entrée.

I tried to stay calm and remember those days at the cabin with Paul, practicing my magic. Adrenaline pumped crazily through my system, making it doubly hard to focus. I made myself go to the place inside me that held my power. I touched it and felt it grow, as I warily watched Squeaky start to advance on me. My ears inexplicably started feeling hot, but I ignored the burning sensation.

Just as Squeaky made its move, rushing forward, mouth wide open, black teeth flashing. My power flared to life, having found an intense focus. I brought up my left arm, palm out in a defensive move, as my power burst forth. The scattered bones around me started to move, but it was too late to prevent contact. Squeaky clamped its powerful jaws painfully down on my forearm. I grabbed onto its horns with my other hand to try to prevent it from pulling back because I knew those lower teeth would gouge out a chunk of my arm if it did. The bones rose in the air. I pushed with my mind and they shot forward like bizarre arrows, striking the sub-demon. Squeaky was so close to me I prayed I wouldn’t get accidentally speared with the flying bones, particularly since my control was erratic and unpredictable.

Squeaky squealed in surprise and released my arm as the first volley made contact. A small rib bone had pierced one of its front legs, just above a hoof. It ran back a few feet so it could reach down with its mouth and pull it out. Despairingly, I saw the other bones had simply bounced off Squeaky’s armored hide. I had to aim for the unprotected head and neck, if I had any chance at all. The smell of its own blood and mine seemed to infuriate the sub-demon; its face contorted in anger and bloodlust. The effort to hurl the bones at it had weakened me, and my ears and cheeks were hot and burning.

With my feet stuck in the ground I lost my balance and sat down hard. I heard a click sound and remembered the clicker Roland had given me.
